Many riders tend to hold onto their helmets for years, ignoring signs of wear, or refuse to replace them after minor mishaps. The common refrain of ‘it is just a helmet, how could it go bad?’ is a dangerous misconception that can put lives at risk.

Understanding the shelf life of a helmet
To find out how old your helmet is, check the manufacturing date (MFG) printed on the sticker inside or under the lining. As a general rule, a helmet has a shelf life of five to seven years from its date of manufacture. However, once you start using it regularly, its active lifespan reduces. Experts recommend replacing your helmet every three to five years, depending on how often you ride. Even if you only ride once or twice a month, the natural degradation of materials means your helmet cannot protect you indefinitely.
The hidden threat of EPS foam degradation
The most crucial protective component of a helmet is the Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) liner. This inner foam layer is designed to absorb the shock of an impact, safeguarding your brain from severe trauma. Over time, EPS foam naturally degrades, losing its elasticity and structural strength. An old helmet with degraded foam will fail to cushion your head during an impact, transferring the force of the crash directly to your skull.
How UV rays and daily use cause wear
Environmental factors play a massive role in weakening your safety gear. Continuous exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight degrades the outer plastic or composite shell of the helmet, making it brittle and prone to cracking. This is why safety experts advise storing your helmet in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated spot when not in use. Additionally, daily handling—such as dropping it accidentally, knocking it against walls, or placing it on the bike handlebars—causes micro-fractures that compromise its structural integrity without showing visible outer damage.
Post-accident guidelines and proper fit
Never reuse a helmet that has been involved in an accident, no matter how minor the collision seemed. Even a small impact can permanently compress the internal EPS padding, rendering it useless for future protection. Chin straps, buckles, and fitting systems can also stretch or crack under pressure, compromising how securely the helmet stays on your head. When buying a new helmet, always look for certified safety standards such as ISI or other internationally recognised benchmarks, and ensure the helmet fits snugly.
